In his textbook The Philosophical Journey, William Lawhead defines the problem of evil as “the difficulty of reconciling the existence of suffering and other evils in the world with the existence of God”. Traditionally, philosophers place various types of suffering and unfortunate situations into two categories. The category of Moral Evil encompasses the actions and their side effects that originate from beings that are considered capable of being held morally responsible.
